Abstract

During the Enlightenment period in Spain, a great number of educated people who were in command took part in the numerous voyages for the purposes of exploration, science and the discovery both in America and in the Spanish-owned territories in the Pacific Ocean. The majority of these people belonged to the Navy or were graduates of the new Guardia Marina academies, and many were also experts in Cartography, Geodesy, Astronomy and Geography. It seems that they all had one thing in common as there is evidence that they learned and put into practice the thought of Emanuele Kant in his affirmation that Geography makes people free and transforms them into citizens of the world.
