Implantación de la población hispánica en Indias. De asentamientos efímeros a ciudades arraigadas

Resumen

La primera generación de descubridores y exploradores de América, entre la llegada de Colón y la partida de la expedición de Cortés, costeó el territorio continental del Caribe y reconoció en profundidad la isla Española y las otras grandes Antillas. Los mapas de la época muestran sus hallazgos y la creación de asentamientos que realizaron con diferente éxito, según fueran los conflictos con las poblaciones indígenas, las condiciones climáticas o los lugares elegidos, entre otros factores. En este artículo se revisan varias de estas poblaciones, explicando sus orígenes, toponimia, evolución y los motivos por los que algunas fueron efímeras en tanto que otras han llegado a ser y ciudades principales en los países que conforman aquellos espacios.

ABSTRACT

The first generation of discoverers and explorers of the Americas, between the arrival of Columbus and the departure of the Cortés expedition, coasted the Caribbean mainland and made an in-depth exploration of the island Hispaniola and the other large Antilles. The maps of the time show their findings and the creation of settlements that they carried out with different success, depending on the conflicts with the indigenous populations, the climatic conditions or the chosen places, among other factors. This article reviews several of these populations, explaining their origins, toponymy, evolution and the reasons why some were ephemeral while others have become major cities in the countries that make up those spaces.
