Resumen

El objetivo del texto es mostrar los rasgos esenciales de Sevilla en 1519, momento en el que Magallanes parte de la misma para comenzar su expedición. Para ello, se analiza el papel de la ciudad como capital económica del Imperio Español, y centro neurálgico de las nuevas rutas comerciales de escala global. Se realiza una aproximación visual a la ciudad de la época, a través del análisis e interpretación de sus principales hitos espaciales. Por último, se extiende el análisis a diferentes rasgos económicos, sociales, religiosos, culturales o físicos de la Sevilla del siglo xvi, poniendo de relieve la extrema diversidad de realidades que convivieron en el esplendor de aquella ciudad.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the text is to show the essential features of Seville in 1519, when Magellan set off from Seville to begin his expedition. To this end, it analyses the city’s role as the economic capital of the Spanish Empire and the nerve centre of the new trade routes on a global scale. A visual approach to the city at the time is made through the analysis and interpretation of its main spatial landmarks. Finally, the analysis is extended to different economic, social, religious, cultural and physical features of 16th century Seville, highlighting the extreme diversity of realities that coexisted in the splendour of that city.
