El Madrid precortesano: la gestación de una capital (Siglos XIV-XVI)

Resumen

En los dos siglos anteriores a 1561, sin que pueda hablarse de nada parecido a un plan previo, está demostrado por la evidencia de los hechos que los reyes de la Casa de Trastámara realizaron en la villa de Madrid, su alcázar y su entorno territorial importantes transformaciones, que los harían cada vez más atractivos para las estancias reales. Obviamente, a estos antecedentes se unieron en los reinados de Carlos I y Felipe II nuevas circunstancias derivadas de la enormidad y diversidad de los territorios que tenían que administrar y de la complejidad de la maquinaria administrativa para hacerlo, todo lo cual implicaría la liquidación del modelo cortesano medieval itinerante. Lo que en absoluto puede mantenerse es que la elección de Madrid como capital estable de la Monarquía Hispánica fuera una improvisación o del mero «capricho» del Rey Prudente. Eso sí, sin haber dejado por escrito los motivos de su decisión, probablemente porque no la considerara definitiva.

ABSTRACT

Over about two centuries before 1561, even not having a proper project, the kings of the Castilian Trastamara Dynasty put in place many changes affecting the Madrid medieval core, its castle and its surrounding territory with the result of it to become more and more appealing for the stay of the royal court, at that moment non steady. Later on, when the new Habsburg Dynasty took the throne of Spain in 1517 under Charles I (1517-1556) and Philip II (1556-1598) many things had changed that made unavoidable to decide the royal court and government to stay at a permanent seat, the opposite model
to the medieval nomadic one. Therefore, the Philip II’s decision of choosing Madrid to play this political role must not be considered as thoughtless or arbitrary; on the contrary, it was based on such practical reasons as to use the city of Madrid as support of the royal bureaucracy and to organize its surrounding territory as image of his absolute power and as hunting and leisure ground for him, his family and his court.
