Abstract The article deals with the period 1939-1956 in Madrid after finishing the civil war (1936-1939) when  the Franco´s government was mostly interested on paving the way to create an imperial image of the city to strengthen his dictatorial regime. Therefore, there was not much to wait from the point of view of the needs of the marginal suburban neighborhoods came into being from the second half of the XIXth century along the Madrid municipality’s borders. The reasons were, beside the postwar economic hardship, the public administration’s insensitivity and the lack of an overall view of the policies to be implemented. All along the period considered the only planning tool carried out from 1946 on (named Plan Bidagor) did not arrived to solve any of the above mentioned problems; neither the former municipalities nor the Madrid one after the municipal annexation in the period 1947-1950 overcame the challenge to upgrade the substandard urban conditions of those peripheral informal working-class neighborhoods. The case of Puente de Vallecas neighborhood is put forward in this text as the paradigm of the social and urban aftermath of this failure. %U https://boletinrsg.com/index.php/boletinrsg/article/view/97 %J Boletín de la Real Sociedad Geográfica %0 Journal Article %P 157-237%N CLV %@ 2603-6010 %8 2020-11-02
