ABSTRACT Nothing had changed in Las Hurdes’s (Cáceres) population everyday conditions over the three starting decades of the XXth Century marked by the hunger and the illness. Nevertheless, things worked otherwise when thinking about the way Las Hurdes ware understood from outside far away from the previous legend and y prejudices and, first of all, because the wish that the situation should be changed was widely accepted. Concerning the changes, the role played at that period by the catholic institutions must be underlined as they settled up a set of decisions under the inspiration of the philantropical and welfare ideology; as a result, some new public facilities and services improved in some way the previous situation of extreme abandonment. At the same time, in Spain as a whole and specially among a group of writers and scholars an enormous concern about the country’s decline after the loss of the last colonies in 1898 emerged at the same time that the wish of finding out the solutions for the situation. Under the name of regenerationism this intellectual group thought that the problems of such a regions as Las Hurdes should be solved at the same time and integrated into the regeneration of the whole country. This point of view was shared by Maurice Legendre et Miguel de Unamuno, linked all along their life by the common love for Spain and by the concern for Las Hurdes’s situation; even so, they didn’t agree about the way it should be improved. The paper goes into details about how these two leading thinkers showed with ideas and proposals their feelings on Spain and Las Hurdes.
